Swart still survives as the word swarthy, while blaek became the modern English black. These are parallelled in Middle English by the terms swart for dull black and blaek for luminous black. Old High German also had two words for black: swartz for dull black and blach for a luminous black. Ater has vanished from the vocabulary, but niger was the source of the country name Nigeria, the English word Negro, and the word for "black" in most modern Romance languages ( French: noir Spanish and Portuguese: negro Italian: nero Romanian: negru). The Ancient Romans had two words for black: ater was a flat, dull black, while niger was a brilliant, saturated black. Kuanos' could mean both dark blue and black. The Ancient Greeks sometimes used the same word to name different colors, if they had the same intensity. More distant cognates include Latin flagrare ("to blaze, glow, burn"), and Ancient Greek phlegein ("to burn, scorch"). The word black comes from Old English blæc ("black, dark", also, "ink"), from Proto-Germanic * blakkaz ("burned"), from Proto-Indo-European * bhleg- ("to burn, gleam, shine, flash"), from base * bhel- ("to shine"), related to Old Saxon blak ("ink"), Old High German blach ("black"), Old Norse blakkr ("dark"), Dutch blaken ("to burn"), and Swedish bläck ("ink").
Once you’ve chosen your character, you’ll be handed a series of campaign missions to take on to progress the story and earn shards, the world’s currency. The main campaign is presented through chapters, each displaying the best level for playing them at. With a large open world to explore, waterlogged as most of it is, it’s up to you to explore Ursee and figure it out. Initially it can be overwhelming as there’s no explanation for choosing your character, said characters backstory and how much of an impact that has going forward or even how the games levelling system works. The Warrior Edition coincides with the release of the games latest DLC, Edge of The World, and contains all of the games previously released DLC, making for a pretty filling package.Īfter a short tutorial on the basics of flight and combat, The Falconeer pops you into Ursee without any further explanations, letting you figure out what you can and can’t do on your own. Released in 2020 for Xbox and PC, The Falconeer now makes its way to PS4, PS5 and Switch with the Warrior Edition. Political intrigue, backstabbing and the pursuit of wealth and power above all else will be yours to witness and, just possibly, figure out what happened to the world along the way. As a mercenary atop a giant Falcon, it’s your job to take on the dirty missions given to you by the different houses you will represent across the games chapters. I find it hard to concentrate and I inevitably smash the buttons on the controller to skip ahead, and as I said, it seemed to be a bit out of my comfort range.Part RPG, part open world dogfighting game, Tomas Sala’s The Falconeer throws you into the deep-end, both narratively and mechanically, of the cataclysm-shaped landscape, Ursee. I’ve never been a fan of the style of storytelling that The Falconeer employs – floating heads spewing exposition. I’d get up high, catch a jetstream of air to propel me away from the home base, and away I’d go on the search for some hideouts or temples, inching my way close to a very achievable Platinum trophy. Some of my favourite moments in The Falconeer came when I wasn’t on a mission, but just exploring the world a little. The watery landscape is almost like a moving painting with the waves moving in a strange fashion, the night sky dotted with stars of unequal size as if poked into the world at random by the artist’s paintbrush. It’s stunning and like nothing else you’ll see in a game. While I can whinge and moan about this and that, what I have no right to complain about is the game’s world. Simple and effective, if a little too ordinary I’m flying atop a great big falcon, after all, why not incorporate some of that majestic create into the combat? I’d have liked the mounts to have had a bit more presence during combat, rather than just being a means to get around. The combat isn’t half bad, though, and I found that it worked really well with a very simple set-up – point your bird’s cursor in the general direction of the enemy and pull the trigger. I died so many times on this mission and it was a real slog to redo it again and again, mainly because of the pointless escort at the start. There was one particular mission in Chapter 3 where I had to escort a ship ( which was boring) and then battle enemies while protecting a key. This is especially annoying with the multi-part missions. Something that really got me frustrated was the lack of mid-mission checkpoints, meaning that if you fail a mission, you’re doing it all over again. For a game that’s so unique and against the norm with its setting, it sticks to the familiar far too much. Most of your time in the story is going from mission to mission, escorting a ship through treacherous territory retrieving an item from a lost temple raiding an opposing faction – it’s a familiar loop and that loop is short. This is obviously simplified a lot, but it works as a general rule. A canvas size of more than 6000 pixels on the long side isn’t usually needed, unless you want to print it poster-sized. You may also have stabilization turned up on brushes and situations where you dont need it, which is supposed to make the stroke happen slower. If you want to print your digital art, your canvas should be a minimum of 3300 by 2550 pixels. I rarely go over 5000px on either side when im working, and at that point i usually downsize for export anyway. In my opinion, theres not much good reason to keep your spacing below 3-5 and in fact, this might especially be the case in bigger canvas's. The size of your canvas designed for the web depends on the platform you plan to display it on. Spacing that is too low can also slow down a brush, as its applying the brush tip more often in one stroke, causing chug. Use an inch to pixel converter to find your dimensions in pixels. This might also apply to detailed brush tips. Textures cause an insane amount of lag especially at higher brush sizes and the more intricate they are. The biggest factors is Brush Lag hands down has to be any textures, as well as spacing. SETTING UP YOUR CANVAS Create a 64×64 pixel document (1) Go to View > Grid/Ruler Settings (2) Configure as the following so you can see a grid with every. I also have 16GB RAM, as well as a decent Nvidia Graphics Card, but I leave clip at 80% which is enough to work nicely, watch youtube or be in a discord call, as well as stream in said discord call. That way you work bigger, so if you need to shrink down, quality won't be lost as much - it's a lot easier to shrink things down than make them bigger.Allocating too much RAM can sometimes cause similar problems to allocating to little. So I would suggest increasing your canvas size, while maintaining your dpi between 350 - 600. and won't account much for print size if the size of the page itself is only 2 inches wide (and there's only so much you can increase a page size before it loses its quality.)įor reference, I typically work at 350 dpi, with my canvas sizes starting at 8.5 x 11 (the standard size of printer paper). So I would suggest making a bigger canvas size, but remember that the dpi is just the dots-per-inch output and only affects the resolution when you adjust the size/zoom in/out/etc. (and the actual line templates if you need them). That will crop your canvas to the rectangular area you chose. This is the one that looks like a dashed line in the shape of a square. Don't forget that Clip Studio Paint also comes with some pre-made page sizes that are very handy as well, including B4, A4, B6, etc. With any luck, the selection tool is on that stack of tools that, by default, line the left edge of your screen. After we set the dimensions, it is equally important that we set the best resolution for printing needs. You can choose from Color, Gray, or Monochrome. Enter the resolution of the canvas or Click the drop-down button next to it to select a value. So the bleed area in this work is 0.2 inches. Swaps the width and height of the canvas. So, in this example I'm going to set the canvas dimensions to be 6.2 inches by 4.2 inches. How to decide the canvas size from the thumbnails of SNS I took a video. In reality, that pixel size is only about 2 inches wide. In standard printing, the bleed size should be at least 3mm up to 5mm or you can add more as needed. For beginner painters who are worried about canvas size determination. The time between the P- and S-waves is routinely used to determine the distance to their source, the epicenter of the earthquake. The P-wave gets progressively farther ahead of the S-wave as they travel through Earth’s crust. P-waves have speeds of 4 to 7 km/s, and S-waves correspondingly range in speed from 2 to 5 km/s, both being faster in more rigid material. Both components of earthquakes travel slower in less rigid material, such as sediments. For that reason, the speed of longitudinal or pressure waves (P-waves) in earthquakes in granite is significantly higher than the speed of transverse or shear waves (S-waves). The bulk modulus of granite is greater than its shear modulus. Earthquakes have both longitudinal and transverse components, and these travel at different speeds. Table 17.1 Speed of Sound in Various MediaĮarthquakes, essentially sound waves in Earth’s crust, are an interesting example of how the speed of sound depends on the rigidity of the medium. The relationship of the speed of sound, its frequency, and wavelength is the same as for all waves: Similar arguments hold that a large instrument creates long-wavelength sounds. So a small instrument creates short-wavelength sounds. High pitch means small wavelength, and the size of a musical instrument is directly related to the wavelengths of sound it produces. Small instruments, such as a piccolo, typically make high-pitch sounds, while large instruments, such as a tuba, typically make low-pitch sounds. The wavelength of sound is not directly sensed, but indirect evidence is found in the correlation of the size of musical instruments with their pitch. You can also directly sense the frequency of a sound. The flash of an explosion is seen well before its sound is heard, implying both that sound travels at a finite speed and that it is much slower than light. You can observe direct evidence of the speed of sound while watching a fireworks display. Sound, like all waves, travels at a certain speed and has the properties of frequency and wavelength. Sound travels more slowly than light does. It is not dependent upon the sound amplitude, frequency or wavelength.Figure 17.7 When a firework explodes, the light energy is perceived before the sound energy. rho is the density &rho and p is the sound pressure.Notice: The speed of sound is alike on a mountain top as well as at sea level with the same air temperature.Google is not correct (look at the following link): is the answer of Google: "Speed of sound at sea level = 340.29 m/s".This is no good answer, because they forgot to tell us the temperature, and the atmospheric pressure "at sea level" has no sense. The speed of sound in air is determined by the air itself. The air pressureand the density of air (air density) are proportional to each other at the same temperature. It applies always p / &rho = constant. Other speeds, such as those presented below, use values other than those relating to a "standard atmospheric day." They are not incorrect, they are simply based on values other than a "standard atmospheric day."The speed of sound is 343 m/s or 1126.547 ft/s (768.095 mph) at a temperature of 20☌ or 68☏.The speed of sound has nothing to do with the atmospheric pressure at sea level, but the temperature is very important.Scroll down to related links and read the short article "Speed of sound - temperature matters, not air pressure".The air pressure and the air density are proportional to each other at the same temperature. The speed of sound c depends on the temperature of air and not on the air pressure! The humidity of air has some negligible effect on the speed of sound. At standard day values, the speed of sound is 761 mph. The speed of sound is normally calculated using the values of a "standard atmospheric day." A "standard atmospheric day" refers to a sea level pressure of 29.92 in-Hg (1013.2 mb) and a temperature of 15☌ (59☏). It can be hard to imagine how to synthesize concepts or skills in such a short span of time. These time recommendations can make educators anxious. It is important to note that the majority of these studies have been conducted on young adults, so for younger students try to keep it 6 minutes or under (Brame, 2015). Image from Brame, 2015.Īfter 9 minutes, engagement drops considerably, and if your video is over 12 minutes, you have a real problem on your hands. Between 6 and 9 minutes, engagement drops slightly. The ideal length should be under 6 minutes. The research on how long instructional videos should be is incredibly clear and tells a simple narrative: Keep it short. But before you start investing countless hours of time and energy constructing videos, it’s important to understand what the research says about cultivating engagement. When launching distance learning and meeting students’ needs, it can be tempting to dive head first into instructional video creation without actually understanding what works. The following tips align with what we teach participants about creating their own instructional videos. Design effective self-paced learning experiences for students at all levels.Build student-friendly websites for instructional content.Plan and record their own instructional videos.Through our in-person trainings and our Modern Classroom Essentials* course, we have supported teachers as they learn how to: Years later, I left the classroom to launch The Modern Classrooms Project, a nonprofit that equips and empowers educators to create blended, self-paced, mastery-based classrooms of their own. This allowed me to facilitate a blended, self-paced, mastery-based classroom built on the backbone of high quality feedback and differentiated instruction: So five years ago, I made the commitment to eliminate lectures from my classroom and replace them with instructional videos I created myself. I knew technology could be a powerful tool to amplify my impact, but I wasn’t willing to replace my lectures with a disembodied voice on a screen who didn’t know my students. I was fed up with lecturing and was determined to find a better way to tailor my instruction to students’ needs. My Own Screencast JourneyĪs an educator myself, I spent several years developing screencasts and making mistakes along the way. Building effective screencasts continues to be the barrier that stops educators from making a smooth transition to distance learning, so I have put together the following tips to help guide you through the process. They are a powerful way to deliver instruction, but they do require a fair amount of time and planning, which I have learned through a lot of trial and error. Screencast videos are unique because they are actual recordings of your computer screen or tablet as opposed to a video of an in-person lecture. One of the most effective ways to move instruction online is to build screencast videos. This should not be a surprise to anyone who understands the art of teaching technology simply cannot replace teachers. They miss their students, and their students miss them, so they are willing to put in the hard work to ensure that their authentic teaching styles remain intact. Thankfully, most aren’t comfortable simply replacing themselves with cookie-cutter, ready-made content built without the unique needs of their students in mind. Overnight, educators were forced to rethink their instruction as they moved online. Listen to the interview with Kareem Farah: No, High Stance does not make the Sectopod good at climbing Z-levels or anything like that, in spite of its long legs looking like they could theoretically allow it to climb fairly high. The only time AI-controlled Sectopods will elect to exit High Stance of their own volition is when they spot a good Wrath Cannon opportunity that requires Low Stance to line up the shot correctly. This makes sense, as outside a handful of edge cases the AI clearly isn't coded to account for this is 100% advantageous to it in maps with fairly flat terrain, it's basically boosting its Aim to 90, which is one of the highest values enemies can get in XCOM 2, with no meaningful disadvantage. The Sectopod will pretty much always start its first turn by entering High Stance, and then proceed to never leave it. (Your own troops still use the location of its feet to calculate height advantage, even though their firing animations target its 'head') High Stance raises the Sectopod's firing position 3 Z-levels for purposes of calculating whether it gets height advantage or not and also causes Wall Smash to extend upward appropriately. Regardless, this means you should endeavor to find and kill the Sectopod pod early if a Retaliation mission includes one if you're scouting with a Reaper, it may be worth considering skirting around other pods, even.Ĭan switch freely (At no action point cost and with no cooldown) between Low Stance and High Stance: Low Stance is normal behavior. I wouldn't be surprised if they can kill three civilians in one turn, though I've personally never seen it happen. Not one to rely on -you should still just kill Sectopods before they get a chance to act whenever possible- but if you're in a desperate situation it may save you.Ĭonversely, Sectopods are uniquely threatening in Retaliation missions, as the game only allowing one pod leader to attack per turn doesn't include any special clauses if the selected pod leader happens to be a Sectopod it's absolutely possible for a Sectopod to shoot a civilian, wander elsewhere, and kill another civilian, all while still inactive. (They have 4 ammo by default, for reference) Also curiously, the Sectopod can't Headshot Lost, making them unexpectedly effective at distracting Sectopods. It's not like the game is willing to airdrop in Sectopods.Īnyway: hooray! The return of 2x2 massiveness of classic X-COM!Īs with Overclocked, this isn't the icon or name used in-game and in fact the icon I'm using is literally just me borrowing the Heavy's Bullet Swarm ability.Ĭuriously, reloading ends the Sectopod's turn where normally that's not a turn-ending action. Humorously, mission generation is still perfectly happy to place them in locations they can't naturally reach, such as on Avatar Project Facility roofs, or on top of UFOs. Heights your own soldiers need to climb or Grapple to reach are utterly beyond a Sectopod's grasp, especially as XCOM 2 is loathe to use ramps there's occasionally stairs inside buildings, but that's about it, with most significant height differences being traversed via climb points/hopping straight down. It's also worth noting that Sectopods cannot rise in Z-levels, with the only exception being they'll pop up short ledges. Another example of something not explicitly listed in-game, which I'm borrowing an icon from the previous game and assigning a name for convenience purposes.Ĭuriously, I've seen other parts of the internet claim Sectopods are a 3x3 unit, but while they certainly look large enough for that, you can easily affirm that they're not by using melee targeting: you'll end up with a ring around 4 tiles, said ringed tiles being of course the Sectopod.
